Access to the Historical

Photographs

The online Historical Photographs Database provides access to

approximately 15,000 images; this number continues to grow as

more images are scanned to add to the website. A card index in

the Special Collections Department Reading Room, known as

The Historical Photographs Subject Index, provides access to

the entire VPL historical photograph collection of over 87,000

accessioned photographs. Prints of some of the images may

be viewed in the 131 albums of display prints in the public area.

The majority of the images, however, are available for viewing as

negatives only.
